The Fab Fifty

Okay, so that last tag was fun, but it totally whet my appetite to do my own custom fit list of events. Chris already beat me to this, and I almost didn't go ahead with it after seeing hers, but then I figured ah, what the heck. Consider this the second half of my 100 things about me tag, since only fifty or so applied to me in the first half. I have had so much fun tonight listing these things out and finding pictures to illustrate them. Prairie Guy and I have taken a virtual walk down memory lane. Most of the pictures are just stock exchange searches, because it would have taken me ages to track down my own photos for all of them, but there are a few personal photos thrown in throughout.

1. shaved my eyebrows (well one anyway). I was probably about 5 when I did it. and when my mom came in the bathroom and accused me of playing with her razor I staunchly denied it until she held me up in front of the mirror to show me my reflection sans brow and I started wailing, thinking that it would never grow back.

2. been drug up an asphalt road with my foot caught in the stirrup while riding a proud cut palomino gelding who had too many hormones and not enough brain cells. Can you say ouch?

3. climbed the face of a waterfall in the most impractical shoes and got stuck 2/3rds of the way up with a dear 12 year old friend on a sunday afternoon jaunt when noone knew where we were. Six hours and onset of hypothermia later.... (the waterfall was dousing us the whole time and it was a cold day in fall)

4. broken my leg jumping out of the second story hayloft of a barn into a (sparse) pile of hay.

5. Visited the fabled home of Marco Polo in Venice.

6. Lived mere km's from Vinci, in Tuscany (as in the birthplace of Leonardo da Vinci (literally Leonardo from Vinci).

7. got caught in an undertow and nearly drowned while tubing down a river near Lumby, BC.

8. smashed half my front tooth off going face first down a waterslide

9. have a horrible phobia of wiping out while being seated on chair lifts. Every time.

10. owned a horse (not this horse) that reared up just like Zorro's everytime you pulled back on the reins... very cool.

11. swam with dolphins

12. had an octopus suckered to my back

13. wandered amongst sea lions in their natural habitat in Patagonia

14. Ridden in many of these.

15. Been attacked and robbed in Rio de Janeiro

16. Loaned bed sheets to Phil Keaggy.

17. Jumped in the North Thompson river in the dead of winter in the middle of a rustic red neck sauna. Can you spell insane?

18. Put on full winter gear and made a new years eve toast with my husband to be and some other crazy friends in the walk in freezer of our ship in the Dominican Republic in 1992.

19. caught a seahorse in Puerto Rico.

20. Mosied around the beaches of San Carlos Mexico aged 15 on a red moped with a poodle and portable ghetto blaster at my feet pumping out UB40

21. been to the Blue Grotto

22. Received my engagement ring (purchased and delivered) on the Ponte Vecchio in Florence, Italy.

23. Married the love of my life on the grounds of an Italian villa overlooking the Adriatic

24. honeymooned and vacationed 3 times in Sardegna

25. asked a mexican fisherman wether it had been a good week for "sinning" when I meant to ask him if it had been a good week for FISHING. Pecado=sin, Pescado=fish

26. lost my vehicle in downtown Saskatoon. Seriously. Like lost it for an entire hour. I think I was pregnant if that makes this fact any less shameful.

27. Been to Paul's prison in Rome.

28. Wept at the Colosseum.

29. Been to church services in 8 different languages in 25 different countries

30. spent numerous years of my childhood living in THIS house, which had no indoor toilet (that little roof peeking up behind the snow covered roof of the little building at the far left is the outhouse).

31. Crossed the Atlantic and seen the ocean like glass and also like a churning washing machine where the sky was only visible for intermittent moments between the rising and crashing.

32. been stung by a stingray

33. spent the day on an uninhabited island totally ala Crusoe.

34. Waited on a floating dock till nearly dusk for a baracuda to leave the shadows below and then finally dove in and swam for dear petrified life to shore in Puerto Rico.

35. walked down an avenue in spain while the orange trees were bursting with fruit.

36. eaten grilled eel (love it, bizarrely enough)don't you picture princess buttercup treading water for dear life when you look at that ugly jigger though?

37. witnessed first hand the miracle that is called the spawning of the salmon.

38. ran into a bear while galloping through the woods on horseback (don't know who was more scared the horse, the bear or me).

39. been to the monastery at Assissi (as in St. Francis of Assissi).

40. collected sea shells from inumerable beaches on 9 different coasts.

41. learned the BEST trick to bartering in latin mercatos.

42. lain flat on the floor in milling public below this painting

43. slept in a fisherman's hovel in Mexico where there were no windows, dirt floor, no running water, just four walls and straw mattresses on the floor and cockroaches and lizards and roaches everywhere.

45. woke up to three of these INSIDE my mosquito netting while camping in Columbia

46. Been scared spitless by a capibara (monstrous rodent) the size of a small pig while hiking in Uruguay (ew!)

47. been bucked off a stubborn pony into a barbed wire fence, and shaved off a stubborn pony by a low tree branch.

48. experienced severe hyperventilation level claustrophobia while snorkeling in South America.

49. Seen the wild horses of the Camargue in Southern France.

50. stood on the outer platform at the top of the Duomo in Florence and tried to imagine how on earth those builders worked up there...

Wow!! You have got to see things I can only imagine. The only time I have been out of the US is when I went to Canada in 96 and saw Niagara Falls. It was pretty amazing.
I would love to see every spot of this beautiful world God created, wouldn't you? Oh well, maybe in Heaven!??

@ Chelsea- >>WHY DO YOU LIVE IN SK??? :P<<

Cause there's no place I'd rather live. Seriously. Because my husband can work a job with incredible hours, 5 minutes from home, because I can stay home and raise 5 kids and own a farm and all of our possession 100% debt free on a family gross income of less than 50,000. Because it's peaceful and beautiful and God lives here. Because the people I love most in all the world are here and because these wild prairies and seasons and prairie skies and landscapes have totally romanced me and won my heart.

To anyone who says they think their life seems dull after reading my list... boring is beautiful. I quoted the Bon Jovi song on Berry Girls blog when she made a comment like that, and I can't express how true it is "been all around the world and as a matter of fact, there's only one place left I'd rather go.... who says you can't go home." HOME. This is my favourite place on earth. And my best memories are simple ones that happened here.

Moments of reading with my kids. Walks through fields changing with the seasons. Quad rides and afternoon lazing down by the river. Brushing a horse with the prairie sun beating warm on our hair and the smell of our own lilacs creating a heady perfume.

@ Aimee >>were you with a mercy ship or something<< Or something =) Sorry, I should have answered this in yesterday's post, I went over to Sara's place and answered here there. I lived on THIS ship for close to 3 years; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MV_Logos_II

Okay, that octopus picture was very disturbing. Man, you're cultured! I've been to Montana and Seattle...the first and only times I will be on a plane again. What an exciting life! The most adventure I've had in awhile is Senior Citizens Day at the local grocery store! Now that's living dangerously! You are my pick for coolest person I know!

My goodness! You are amazing! I must admit that the octopus suckered to you back rather grossed me out. (Shudder). I have dreamed of those things, and plan on visiting them after I leave this and pass through the veil. That will be the only way.

here's the thing about "cool". I am totally not *cool*, totally not *hot*, totally not *hip*. There's a big difference between *being* cool and getting to do some pretty cool things. for the record. Chris and Berry Girl are "cool". heh heh.

Wow! You have had a very adventurous life that you should be proud of. I am sure there are many memories, much laughter, etc from these escapades. I am sure your kids enjoy hearing of these "tales of life in the wild blue yonder"....

wow...wow...I am envious of everything but the octopus suckered to your back, oh, and the stingray...

you have been holding out, well, not really, but I bet you have some cool stories you could tell...

You have led an awesome life! What wonderful things you have been blessed to do, experience, and see!

I think it is hilarious that you shaved off your eyebrow. And the one about you getting caught in the undertow (I think that is what you said) reminded me of when I floated out way too far into the ocean in a little inflatable raft... my husband had gone in to get his snorkeling gear and I was floating with my eyes closed... next thing I hear him screaming for me and he is trying to swim out to me... everyone on shore was watching. And along comes a man and his son in a real boat and they rescued me and carried me back to shore! I became the lady who had to be rescued on that vacation!

Thanks for sharing, this was great!

Blessings!

You don't need to make a bucket list I guess. I have lots of questions. Why? I mean, were you the child of a missionary, parent in the service, rich, or just ran off to be wild. Is it hard to be in a secluded place after all that? Why don't you write a book? I would think twice if i were you about telling your kids all that because they will want to live the same dangerous adventures as you. My own children have had some crazy adventures, but I don't think they can come close to that. Well there was the time in Ecuador when my son ( about 22 at the time) Stayed in a hut on a beech alone. Rented a big surf board (he had never surfed before) and had a close call with a big whack on the head. Then he had sun poisoning (which I have witnessed and it is a nightmare) He hitched a ride into a town (on the back of a chicken truck)> Got pain killers. Went back to the hut and nearly over dosed ( while he is alone and has no phone). He is the one that nearly drove his mother crazy. You may have one of those kind of kids...yikes! I need more info. lol
