The Littlest Geography Buff

The other day I was listening in on The Poppet (6) as she read to The Hero (5). Here is what I heard;

"Once upon a time, in the country of Japan, do you know where Japan is, buddy? Here let me show you." rustling of papers as she reaches into the book basket for the little laminated world map we keep there.

The Hero, meanwhile begins to recite the continents, which is what he is familiar with when it comes to geography. "North America, South America, Europe, Asia..."

"No buddy. Japan is not a continent, it's a country. Actually it's an island, look, see here?"

"Uh-huh."

"Okay... in the country of Japan, there lived two Frogs, one of whom made his home in a ditch near the town of Osaka... okay, let's see... Osaka. Oh yeah, here it is. See, buddy?"

"Uh-huh."

"Okay... Osaka, on the seacoast, while the other dwelled in a clear little stream which ran through the city of Kyoto. Let's see... Kyoto. Hmmm... it's not on here. Okay, anyway, let's keep reading."

She continues, and these two town names keep coming up and she keeps pointing out Osaka every time and searching briefly for Kyoto a few more times. The third time she wants to point out Osaka The Hero interjects with, "I know, I KNOW... you showed me already. Can we just read the story?"

Heh heh.

I love maps! What more is there to say? Glad to see others are picking up this love.

I love it! It's adorable that she calls him "Buddy." That's a nickname we use around our house, too. Hubby and I refer to each other as Bud. (As you've probably discovered on my blog as I refer to my husband!)
